Why buses are your business
Nexus is mounting an advertising campaign to underline how important the local bus network is to local businesses and the economy.
The campaign, under the slogan, ‘Buses: They’re Your Business’ promotes the role buses play in getting people to work, retail and leisure opportunities.
Did you know that people make more than 27 million journeys to and from work on buses every year in Tyne and Wear alone – that’s equivalent to more than 100,000 full time workers reliant on buses to get to their jobs.
At office parks such as Cobalt, in North Tyneside, Nexus surveys have shown that good public transport was a major factor in people seeking work in the area.
As many as one on three workers at some of our out of town business parks rely on bus to get to work.
And almost 65 million journeys a year are made by people going shopping or to leisure activities – a massive part of the business for retailers, restaurants and bars in town and city centres and at Metrocentre.
Nexus estimates around six million shoppers a year use the network of bus routes that serve Metrocentre’s attractive modern bus station, around one in four of all customers at Europe’s largest shopping centre.
Eldon Square in Newcastle, meanwhile, says three out of four shoppers arrive by public transport, most of them by bus.
Tobyn Hughes, Director of Customer Service for Nexus, said: “Good public transport increases workforce flexibility and makes it easier to get to the shops or have a good time, whether or not you own a car.
“Buses provide three-quarters of all public transport journeys in Tyne and Wear. This advertising campaign highlights to the business community the positive impact this has.”
