Accessibility
Many bus services in Tyne and Wear are operated with low floor buses.
These have powered or manual ramps to make it easier for disabled people to board and have dedicated wheelchair spaces.
Traveline can give details of which services are operated with low floor vehicles:
Assistance
There are Government regulations about the assistance bus drivers are required to give disabled passengers - please see the pdf.
Safety and security
We want people to feel safe when they are travelling. We also want people to feel safe when they are walking to and waiting at the bus stop.
We have invested in comprehensive CCTV coverage at all bus interchanges and on buses, in partnership with the bus operators. And we've spent £100k on installing CCTV in selected bus shelters.
We want to do more. Our security officer will be looking into the following initiatives:
- Developing a system to monitor incidents on buses and in the vicinity of bus stops to identify hot spots
- Investing in CCTV cameras at bus stops where issues are identified
- Working with the police and community safety officers to target areas where there are problems
