Bus stops
We provide bespoke timetable information at more than 6,000 bus stops and shelters across Tyne and Wear, helping 1.1 million people to plan their journeys.
We are committed to continually improve waiting facilities for our customers and each year we renew or replace shelters across Tyne and Wear.
We have also introduced Real Time Information terminals at selected bus stops and plan to add many more in the future.
Cleanliness at our shelters and stops is important to us. On average 226 stops are cleaned and maintained every day.
We currently have CCTV in 66 shelters and are undertaking a project to add a further 70.
Unfortunately vandalism does happen sometimes. If you see a shelter that has been vandalised please let us know and we will ensure it is repaired as soon as possible.
Call the shelter hotline on 0191 203 3365 or email busstops@nexus.org.uk.
Bus shelters in the City of Newcastle are cleaned and maintained under a separate agreement with the council. We would be happy to pass any reports to the necessary contractor.
Bus stations
Around 30 million passengers per year use the 17 bus stations and transport interchanges in Tyne and Wear. Nexus manages:
- the four major bus stations at Eldon Square and Haymarket in Newcastle, Park Lane in Sunderland and Gateshead Interchange - used by over 12 million passengers a year;
- three Metro interchange stations at Four Lane Ends, Heworth and Regent Centre - used by about 2 million passengers a year;
- eight smaller bus stations at Wallsend, Jarrow, North Shields, South Shields, Washington Concord, Hetton-le-Hole, Blaydon and Winlaton - used by a further 8 million passengers.
Bus stations at the MetroCentre, Washington Galleries and Killingworth are owned and managed by other companies but Nexus provides the bus service information.
Several of these bus stations including Eldon Square, Gateshead and Four Lane Ends have been built in the last 10 years. The new bus station at Eldon Square was provided by Capital Shopping Centres as part of the major expansion of the shopping centre. This replaced the old and notorious underground bus concourse and raises standards for bus stations nationally to a new level. Haymarket was significantly remodelled in 2011 to provide a much brighter and more attractive facility, with enhanced CCTV for customer safety.
Whatever their size and age, we seek to ensure that our bus stations are well maintained, are cleaned daily, and are a safe and pleasant environment with high standards of lighting and CCTV security where possible. We have spent over £1.5m over the last three years, upgrading and refurbishing older facilities, including better lighting and increasing CCTV coverage.
Bus Station Customer Assistants and evening security staff are provided seven days a week at Eldon Square, Four Lane Ends, Haymarket, Gateshead and Sunderland Park Lane.
