Callerton Parkway to Airport (5.5 miles)
- Nearest metro:
- Disabled access
Exit Callerton Parkway Metro Station onto a road near a level crossing. Turn left and walk straight ahead, making use of the grass verges. Keep in the same direction, past two roundabouts. After a further 300 yards, just before some cottages, go onto the public bridleway on the right. Walk ahead to reach a waymarked gate on the left. Go through the gate and follow the track as it bears right to reach another waymarked gate. Go through the gate and turn left. Now follow the broad track which soon passes flight path warning lights on your right. You might see (and hear!) an aeroplane coming in to land. The track eventually skirts a pond on the left and you arrive at a gate, next to a wide metal gate. Go through the gate and follow the wide track to exit onto a pavement near a roundabout. Bear left and walk to the end of the pavement and, with extreme care, cross both lanes of the dual carriageway. Turn right and follow the path towards the airport buildings. A few yards before a roundabout, you reach a road and path on your left. Cross the road (A).
Turn left to follow the path until you reach a roundabout. Keep walking in the same direction and cross the road. Pass Stone Cottage Bed and Breakfast on your right. Carry on past The Badger pub and the entrance to Dobbies Garden Centre and Restaurant. Shortly you come to Ponteland and a 30mph speed restriction sign. About 100 yards past this sign, just before a white bungalow, you reach a fingerpost showing “Prestwick 1/2” (B).
Turn right and walk straight across the field, with the fence on your left. Exit the field by a waymarked gate. Walk straight ahead, then bear left as indicated and exit the farm area by a waymarked kissing gate. The entrance drive to Prestwick Hall is on the left. Turn right and walk to a gateway and bear right to walk a short distance to join a road. Turn left, and making use of pavements and grass verges, walk ahead, past the varied dwellings of Prestwick, to reach The Martins on your right. Just beyond the property, go onto the narrow road on the left (C).
Proceed along the road, going through open country and possibly hearing the pleasant drone of light aircraft overhead, until eventually you come to a crossroads. Turn left and walk ahead. Where the road bears right to Prestwick Mill Farm, carry straight on. You pass Ponteland Golf Course on your left. At the junction of paths, turn left and keep on the track as it makes its way past a pond on your right to reach farm buildings and cottages in a pretty setting at Eland Hall Farm. Carry on along the road, past a housing estate on the left. Continue, with the River Pont on your right, to come to traffic lights in Ponteland village (D).
You are now at the point where you head back to the airport. However, before returning you may wish to explore the attractions of the village and possibly stop for refreshments. To complete the walk, turn left past The Smithy Bistro and walk ahead. After about three-quarters of a mile you come to the footpath that took you to Prestwick (B). Continue straight on to retrace your steps back to (A).
Cross to the other side of the airport entrance road and follow the pavement to the terminal building. Go into the terminal and turn right. Walk to the Metro sign and follow directions to arrive at the Airport Metro Station and the end of the walk.
