Pupils from Mortimer Community College were given a once in a lifetime experience to have personal tuition by the world renowned artist Alex Millar.

Alex Millar

Millar is the creator of the popular ‘gadgie’ character, an illustration of the working man in Newcastle synonymous with bygone industries.

He provided useful tips and advice in becoming a professional artist, in conjunction with Hawthorn Arts. The pupils were then able to use their skills to paint their own ‘gadgie’.

Their work was displayed on the Metro system from South Shields to Newcastle creating a ‘gadgie’ trail.

A Metro train was also ‘wrapped’ in a unique Alexander Millar design and has been in service since December 2010.
