TIME: 1300hrs – 1500hrs
VENUE: Heworth Metro
PRESENT: Traincrew Inspector & Train Care Manager
Numerous passengers queried why the escalators were turned off at Heworth. Example of a typical question:
Q. When escalators are off there is no notification on platforms to let passengers know
A: As an efficiency campaign we aimed to reduce the amount of energy used at Metro stations. This included switching off the escalators during off peak periods. There are 34 escalators each being powered for 19.5 hours per day. Switching these off meant we were able to reduce our carbon footprint and do our bit for the environment.
A trial campaign started in March 2011 and proved a success in reducing the carbon and is now continuing indefinitely. Posters were placed in A frames at the top and bottom of each affected escalator to notify passengers.
Since this campaign started and due to a number of complaints Heworth has been reinstated and is now fully operational.
