Percy Hedley Foundation Trust was nominated as DBTW’s (operator of the Tyne and Wear Metro) official charity in January 2011 until 2013.
It is a local charity which supports Adult and Children with Cerebral Palsy and other disabilities as well as providing specialist services for disabled people in the North East of England. Their nearest station is Benton.
Percy Hedley has been involved in various initiatives with Metro including:
- Adopting Benton station as part of the ‘Station Adoption’ scheme:
-Residents have built planters, grown flowers and created artwork for Benton station.
- Identifying how Metro station staff can become more supportive to vulnerable passengers or passengers with disabilities.
- Alan Wilson, a resident of Percy Hedley qualified an NVQ in Customer Service and has since used his experience to provide assistance to passengers with special needs at Monument station.
Working in partnership with the school, various fundraising activities continue to take place in support of the trust.
