In March 2011, Metro teamed up with Spark FM, a community radio station located at the University of Sunderland’s St Peter’s Campus . It provides a platform for local people mainly serving 15-24 yr olds to inform the community of news and events.

The station relies on volunteers from the catchment area to work with the community in schools, youth projects and other community groups across the City.

Working closely with DB Regio (operators of the Tyne and Wear Metro), Spark FM dedicated a week of broadcasting to ‘Metro’ and its effect on the community, including:

  • A look behind the scenes and history of Metro
  • Passenger perceptions
  • Metro current affairs
  • Community Engagement
  • A Day in the Life of
