Transfares
You can buy a Transfare ticket when your journey includes travelling on more than one type of transport, eg Metro and bus. Transfares allow you to buy just one ticket for your journey.  In general a Transfare allows you to make a journey of two legs on different types of transport.  You must start the second part of your journey within 90 minutes of buying your ticket.

How do I work out the number of zones I'm travelling in?
The map attached shows Tyne and Wear divided into just 3 zones - yellow, green and grey.

  • If your journey is entirely within just one zone (yellow, green OR grey) - you only need a 1 zone Transfare - T1 £2.70.
  • If you are travelling in the yellow AND the green zones or the green AND the grey zones - you need a 2 zone Transfare - T2 £3.50.
  • If you are travelling in the yellow, green AND grey zones - you need a 3 zone Transfare  - T3 £4.20.
  • For example, if you're travelling from Pelaw Metro station to Washington, you would need a 2 zone Transfare(T2), as you're travelling through the green and grey zones.  (Child Transfares allow travel within all three zones).

What if I start my journey on a zone boundary?
Bus stops and Metro stations on boundaries are in both zones.  For example, if you travel from Felling to Windy Nook via Heworth your whole journey is in the green zone so you need a one zone Transfare. Similarly if you travel from Felling to the Freeman Hospital via Monument your journey is entirely in the yellow zone so you need a one zone Transfare.

How do I buy one on Metro?
Simply choose either T1, T2 or T3 on the Metro ticket machine depending on how many zones you'll be travelling in, and pay.

How do I buy one on the bus or the Shields Ferry?
Just tell your bus driver or Ferry operator where you are going and they will work out what ticket you need.

Is travel on Northern Rail included?
Yes, Transfares bought on Metro or bus or Ferry will be accepted on Northern Rail services between Sunderland and the MetroCentre.

What is a Metro Gold Card?

When and where can I use a Metro Gold Card?

Off Peak CT Pass  - You can travel from 9.30am Monday to Friday and all day at weekends and on public holidays. You can also use your Gold Card all day between Christmas and New Year. These are the times that CT Pass holders from outside Tyne and Wear can travel using their Gold Card too.

Please note that your Metro Gold Card is non-refundable.

Where can I buy a Metro Gold Card?

Your Metro Gold Card will be loaded onto your CT Pass. This means that you can now buy one at any Metro station ticket machine. Here's how:

  2. To buy your new Gold Card, press the ‘Metro tickets’ button and you will see the option to buy a Gold Card at the bottom of the list of tickets displayed. Simply choose the ‘Gold Card’ button. If the Gold Card option is not displayed please go to a Nexus TravelShop.

You can also buy or renew your Metro Gold Card at any Nexus TravelShop or at a Payzone store. Click here to find out more about renewing at a Payzone store.

When can I renew my Metro Gold Card?

What happens if my CT Pass expires in less than a year?

If your CT Pass has less than one year’s validity remaining before it expires, or you have a Tyne and Wear Disabled Temporary CT Pass, your Gold Card will be loaded onto your CT Pass, and the months you’re owed when you card expires will be added to your next CT Pass.

How do I use a Metro Gold Card?

On Metro  – You need to touch in and out using the Metro station gates or validators to ensure your ticket is valid for travel. Watch our how to guide to using the gates and validators with a smartcard here.

On the Shields Ferry - Show the ferry operator your CT Pass when you board.

On Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland – To use Northern Rail trains you will need a special ticket which can be obtained on request from any Nexus TravelShop. This will tell the conductor the expiry date of the smart ticket on your CT Pass.

Can I use my Gold Card to travel to early hospital appointments?

Yes, if you have an Off Peak CT Pass with a Gold Card on it and need to travel before 9.30am in order to get to or from a hospital appointment, just show your hospital appointment card or letter with your CT Pass when requested.

What happens if I lose my CT Pass with my Gold Card on it?

If you have lost your CT pass you should report this to Nexus immediately. You will be issued with a new CT Pass (charge of £5), but you will need to buy a new Gold Card. Your new Gold Card will be valid for 365 days from the day of purchase and will not expire on the date of the original Gold Card which you have lost.

How can I check when my Gold Card expires?

You can check the expiry date at Metro station ticket machines by touching your CT Pass on the orange reader. Or, if you have an NFC enabled smartphone, install our Pop card checker app and check your expiry date using your phone. Simply visit Google Play and search for 'Pop card checker', or click here for more information.

A Companion Card lets you take someone with you free of charge when you travel on buses in Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland and Darlington.

What is Companion Card?
A Companion Card lets you take someone with you free of charge when you travel on buses in Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland and Darlington. It’s available to residents of Tyne and Wear who receive certain allowances and are not able to travel without a companion.

So if you need to take a companion with you in order to be able to use buses, and they normally have to buy a ticket, they no longer need to – as long as they are travelling with you, and you have your Companion Card with you. If you have a Metro Gold Card, your Companion Card will be valid on Metro too.

See the table below for full details of fares on other types of local transport.

Will I qualify for a Companion Card?
You will automatically qualify for the scheme if you receive either of the following:

• higher rate care component of the Disability Living Allowance
• high rate Attendance Allowance

You should only apply for a Companion Card if you would not be able to travel by public transport without a companion. A companion is someone who offers you significant assistance throughout the journey - this means help in boarding, moving around and getting off a vehicle. This card is not for people who can travel alone, but need a carer in other aspects of their life. Nexus reserve the right to withdraw the card where it suspects there is abuse of this concession.

You will also need to already have a Concessionary Travel Pass.

How to apply
You’ll need to complete a Companion Card application form. Request one by calling 0191 20 20 747, emailing access@nexus.org.uk or writing to:

Companion Card Applications, Nexus, Nexus House, St James Boulevard, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4AX.

Or you can pick one up from a Nexus TravelShop – just ask for a Companion Card application pack.

What happens next?
Return your sealed application to us in the prepaid envelope supplied with your application pack. You can either post it, or hand it in at a Nexus TravelShop. We will assess your application and if it has been successful, we’ll send a Companion Card out to you within 10 working days.

Your Companion Card replaces your current Concessionary Travel Pass (it looks the same, but has a ‘C+’ in the corner), and will expire on 31 March 2012.

1. Companion Cards are available for Tyne and Wear residents who receive the higher rate care component of the Disability Living Allowance and/or high rate Attendance Allowance who would only be able to use local public transport with the assistance of a companion.

2. You must have qualified for and received a Concessionary Travel Pass to be able to apply for a Companion Card.

3. The companion travelling with a cardholder will be able to travel free of charge on local buses in Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Durham at the times at which concessionary travel is available (after 9.30am Monday to Friday and all day on weekends and public holidays). The companion will pay full fare for journeys outside Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Durham.

4. A companion will also be able to travel free of charge on the Metro if you have a Metro Gold Card.

5. A companion is someone who offers you significant assistance throughout your journey. This includes help in boarding, moving around and getting off a vehicle. This card is not for people who can travel alone, but need a carer in other aspects of their life.

6. Nexus reserve the right to withdraw the card where it suspects there is abuse of this concession.
