Public transport users are being urged to come to a meeting on Thursday, 22 July aimed at setting up a passengers’ group for Tyne and Wear.
The new group would act as a voice for passengers with bus companies and Nexus, and lobby for improvements to public transport.
The meeting takes place from 7.00-9.00pm on Thursday, 22 July in the Council Chamber of Gateshead Civic Centre.
The venue is two minutes walk away from Gateshead Interchange for Metro and many bus services.
The meeting has been organised by members of the group ‘Keep Metro Public’ with the aim of attracting a broad range of public transport users.
Kevin Flynn, Secretary of Keep Metro Public, said: "This is a great chance for those who use public transport to have a say in how our local transport is run, we can assist Nexus to improve the quality of public transport in Tyne and Wear. Setting up a transport users organisation is a challenge to engage and enthuse the travelling public to influence their own local network of public transport."
Nexus is offering support in establishing the group, which it wants to become an independent voice for passengers.
Andy Bairstow, Communications Director of Nexus, which owns and manages Metro, said: “We would be delighted to work with a representative and properly-constituted user’s group if passengers are able to come together and form one.
“This seems to be an opportunity to create a body which will help improve the standards and quality of public transport in Tyne and Wear.”
