Three footbridges over Metro lines are to be closed from Monday 15 March for short periods so maintenance work can be done.
Nexus, which owns, manages and is modernising Metro in a £350m programme, is carrying out minor structural maintenance and applying new floor coatings to the structures.
The footbridge between Hunter’s Road and Salter’s Court, Gosforth, (east of the Metro depot) will be closed for one week from Monday, 15 March. This does not give access to a station but is a local footpath.
People who normally use it will need to take an alternative route along the A189 Killingworth Road/Salter’s Lane while the bridge is closed, a detour of up to one mile.
The footbridge at Hadrian Road station will also be closed for one week from Monday, 15 March. While the work takes place there will be no direct access between platforms.
Instead people will need to cross the line by the foot tunnel between Hadrian Road and North Terrace, about half a mile east of the station, or the road tunnel at Wagon Way, half a mile west of the station.
The footbridge at West Jesmond is closing for three weeks from Monday 15 March as part of a programme of works at the station. Passengers can use the re-opened station subway instead.
Passengers and members of the public needing step-free access between platforms will have to use the road bridges at nearby Forsyth Road or Lyndhurst Gardens to cross the track.
Ken Mackay, Nexus Director of Rail and Infrastructure, said: “Work has to be done on each of these structures sometime soon to make sure they stand the test of time, and the best way to do that is to close them for one short period.
“Unfortunately this means people will have to take the long way round in some cases, but we have planned the work to reduce this inconvenience as much as we can.”
Posters with maps are being displayed at each location to advise passengers.
