Work is nearing completion on a project to build a new footbridge with passenger lifts at Benton Metro – transforming access at the station.
Contractors have been installing steps, wiring and lighting to the new bridge since it was winched into place in a delicate overnight operation in March.
The second of two new lift towers is also nearing completion, with both the bridge and lifts expected to be in use by passengers by early May.
The lifts mean passengers at the station who cannot use the stairs will no longer have to follow a sloping half-mile route to get between platforms.
Benton station is used by around a million passengers every year, including pupils at nearby Percy Hedley School.
