Nexus, which owns, manages and is modernising Metro, has today (Monday, April 4) re-opened the Metro line for train services between Byker and Tynemouth following a 23-day closure for vital modernisation work.
The first trains started running as per the normal Metro timetable from just after 5.30am. The first Metros from Tynemouth into Newcastle via Wallsend departed at 5.35am, while the first train towards the coast left Byker at 5.56am.
North Shields Metro station has re-opened but Platform No2 for trains in the direction of Newcastle, via Wallsend, will remain closed until 7 April, with step-free access only available after 14 April.
Howdon, Meadow Well and Chillingham Road Metro stations are also open. However, building work will continue at these stations for around three months.
The Metro line has been closed for 23 days, March 12 to April 4, while Nexus carried out a 23-day programme of modernisation works, including track replacement and station upgrades.
The work means Nexus has invested almost £40m in modernising Metro in the last 12 months.
Nexus is carrying out the comprehensive modernisation of the line between Byker and Tynemouth as part of the £385m Metro all change programme.
