A troupe of break dancers toured Metro stations encouraging school pupils to ‘get street smart’ and sign up for their new Pop smartcard from Nexus.

As part of its roll-out of smart ticketing Nexus is asking all holders of its existing Under 16 Card to return an application form posted to them – and be among the first to get a new Pop Card for free.

To get the message home it recruited world renowned Newcastle street dancers the Bad Taste Cru, to entertain school children on their journey home.

The roadshows at Metro stations close to schools were a chance for promotional staff to remind under 16s to ‘get smart’ and return their smartcard application forms to Nexus by 28 February to get their free card.

The roadshow visited Tynemouth, Heworth, Park Lane and Chichester stations, with youngsters aged 13 and over will be encouraged to share the roadshow by uploading their photos to the Get Street Smart Facebook page: www.getstreetsmart.co.uk where prizes can be won.

The school day roadshows culminated in a dance-off workshop at Newcastle’s Eldon Square on Saturday 5th February, where young people can come down and learn some basic body popping moves to win spot prizes.

Nexus is issuing new Pop smartcards free to Metro’s Under 16 Card holders and annual season ticket holders now. Other passengers will start to get their smartcards later in the year and soon they will be used by hundreds of thousands of public transport users.
