Passengers travelling by train from the Metrocentre now have access to real time updates thanks to new customer information screens on the platforms and in the Public Transport Interchange.

The new screens along each platform have been jointly funded by Nexus, the Tyne and Wear Passenger Executive, and Metrocentre owner Capital Shopping Centres at a cost of £38,000.

Local train operator Northern Rail, which manages the station, installed the new screens and will take care of their up keep.

Blaydon MP Dave Anderson visited the Metrocentre station to meet those involved in the project and view the information screens in person.

Mr Anderson said: “It’s tremendous to see this major investment in our local transport system. It helps everyone when they have up to date information when travelling and this is a great step in the right direction.”

Gavin Prior, General Manager at Metrocentre, said: “Continuing to look at ways in which we can ensure that we provide the best customer service experience is a number one priority for Metrocentre.

“The new screens are just one example of how we intend to continue to invest in the future. They will be of great benefit for all those who travel by train.

“Looking ahead to next year a programme of works to update the station will commence early 2013. This will form part of our objectives to encourage more commuters to travel by public transport where possible and ensure they have an enjoyable experience.”

Gordon Harrison, Strategic Planning Manager for Nexus, said: “We are funded by the taxpayer to improve all public transport in Tyne and Wear – and these new screens provide better customer information at a busy rail station.”

Drew Haley, Client and Stakeholder Manager for Northern Rail, said: “Our experience is that passengers value real-time travel information and these screens will help us keep passengers up-to-date with information about when their next train will arrive and station calling points along the route."

Both platforms now have screens advising of next departures and any delays to services, with a summary screen in the Public Transport Interchange also providing information on the next 12 departures.

Metrocentre station is used by around 350,000 passengers a year with direct trains from the Tees Valley, Durham Coast, Sunderland and Newcastle in one direction, and the Tyne Valley line from Hexham, Carlisle and on to West Cumbria in the other.
