Nexus has now issued more than 7,000 smartcards to passengers, as the Pop card transport revolution gathers pace.

The Pop card will transform the way people access Metro and other local public transport services.

More and more passengers are now applying for a Pop card, which will be used to activate new electronic ticket gates and station validators when they go live later this year.

Nexus has issued 7,000 adult Pop cards so far and the number is on the increase.

The Pop card is a credit card sized piece of plastic that will allow you to buy Metro travel in new ways, including online.

Travel products like weekly, 4-weekly and annual MetroSavers can be easily uploaded on to a Pop card at the new ticket vending machines at Metro stations.

Passengers will eventually be able to use their Pop card on a pay-as-you-go basis, and will be able to upload credit on to their card using their home computer, at local shops and at Metro stations.

4-weekly MetroSaver customers will need to apply for a Pop card by April and annual MetroSaver holders when they come to renew their pass.

Nexus will contact existing annual MetroSaver customers to convert them to the Pop card if their ticket expiry date is after the ticket gates come into operation later this year.

Nexus will contact existing MetroSaver customers to convert them to the Pop card if their ticker expiry date is after the automatic ticket gates come into operation later this year.

Although customers will still be able to buy single, daily and weekly tickets at Metro stations without a Pop card, travelling using Pop will be cheaper and easier.

Director of Customer Services for Nexus, Tobyn Hughes, said: “The Pop card revolution is already underway. We have over 7,000 people now signed up and more are following suit.

“Customers can apply for a Pop card on our website. It just takes a few minutes to fill the form in and then the card is sent out in the post. Anyone with a 4- weekly MetroSaver needs to get their Pop card application in by April.

“When we activate the automatic ticket gates and station validators later this year the Pop card will work just like the Oyster card on the London Underground. It will transform the way people use Metro.”
