Public art has been part of the journey on Tyne and Wear's public transport for 30 years. There are now more than 35 permanent artworks on Metro, at bus interchanges, ferry landings and even a multistorey car park, created and maintained through the Nexus Art on Transport programme. We are nationally recognised for the quality of work and the benefits it brings to the travelling environment. We recognise that art in public places is a vital component in creating and sustaining lively communities and creative towns and cities. Often our projects have involved working with local communities other times internationally famous artists have been commissioned. These pages tell you all about the art you can find around Tyne and Wear. We have also printed a handy pocket guide available FREE from Nexus Travelshops detailing the many works.
