Electrolyte II is a clear and fluorescent construction of parallel hollow pipes and circular dials four metres in length and 1.25 metres in diameter.
Digitally controlled LED lamps are housed within each of the twelve pipes and programmed to rotate like a child’s magic lantern. Casting coloured light onto the surface of the building ‘Electrolyte II’ adds colour and dynamism to the space and provides a focus for waiting passengers. Electrolyte II refers to Sunderland’s associations with the production of industrial glassware and its form is derived from an industrial, horizontal heat exchanger. Having originally been made at Cornings these items are still used in the petro-chemical industry. Taken out of their normal environment these very functional items can reveal an extraordinary beauty.
