Poster sites throughout the system have been used since the 80s as highly visible locations for artists’ works.
In 1987 Conrad Atkinson created two posterworks for South Shields Metro Station and in 1988 the Metro Billboard project was realised in association with Projects UK with works commissioned from 8 artists including Willie Docherty, Mona Hatoum and John Kippin. In 1996, during the Year of the Visual Arts, advertising sites were the venue for work by the American artist. Les Levine and in 1998 ‘Mind the Reality Gap’ was organised with Northumbria University and New Writing North. A thirteen episode thriller was created, each episode produced as posters and displayed in advertising sites throughout the Metro system.
