Next Stop Byker was a series of four temporary works installed in Byker Metro station between November 05 and June 06.
Next Stop Byker has continued to use the site at Byker Metro station for a further series of temporary commisions. A striking and moving series of self-portraits by people taking part in Self Portrait Refugee, a new campaign for the national Channel 4 self-portrait project Self Portrait UK, were displayed at Byker Metro Station from the start of International Refugee Week in June 2006 and remained until September. Each self-portrait showed the many different ways in which people who are currently seeking Asylum or who have experience of being a Refugee and are making a new life in the North East, choose to represent themselves and the things that matter to them. Behind each innovative and distinctive image were many individual stories and experiences, hopes, dreams, ideas and aspirations, revealing the identity and creativity of people of all ages who wish to communicate to others their feelings about who they are, where they are from and how they wish to contribute to where they are now. Self Portrait Refugee was co-ordinated by Media 19. More information at selfportrait@media19.co.uk.
