Three Rivers Crossword was a series of cryptic crossword clues which were presented as ‘cove cards’ in metro trains in December 2005 – January 2006. The solutions, which created a word map of the North East following the course of the Rivers Tyne, Wear and Tees – was conceived by artist Alec Finlay and developed in collaboration with Sandy Balfour, a renowned crosswordsmith for the The Guardian, and pupils of Westlea Primary School in Seaham. Alec Finlay said of this that he, ‘decided to use a crossword because it is one way people amuse themselves on such a journey, to pass the time. It is a familiar idiom, and is one of the most popular examples of a creative and playful use of language to remodel a view of the world’.
