About the landings

South Shields.

The distinctive new ferry landing was officially opened in July 1999.  It consists of a 50m steel bridge leading to a 32 square metre reinforced concrete pontoon.  There's an enclosed waiting area and the needs of the visually impaired have been catered for with a tactile walkway.

The previous ferry landing had been at South Shields for a century.

North Shields

The new landing at North Shields was officially opened in July 2004.  It also features a fully enclosed glazed waiting area with seating.  The bridge leading to the landing is longer than the previous one, which means that the gradient has been reduced, making access easier for wheelchair users.
