Metro: all change is divided into three phases of work which together will modernise the whole Metro system. These are:
Phase 1 – 2008-2010: £55.2m investment. o Modernisation of Haymarket (funded through private development) o Modernisation of platform areas at Sunderland station (completion summer 2010) o New station at Simonside (opened March 2008) o New 400-space Park and Ride at Northumberland Park (opened December 2008) o CCTV and electronic/audio displays on Metrocars o Six lift replacements at key stations o New, bigger, car park for Hebburn (delivered by private developer spring 2010)
Phase 2 –2010-2021: £350m investment.
In the first three years (2010-2013) we will be investing in the following programmes: o Central station, used by 5 million passengers a year, rebuilt to a ‘Haymarket’ blueprint. o Five new escalators for Monument, Metro’s busiest station. o 11 suburban stations modernised. o Four new lifts for Heworth and Four Lane Ends interchanges. o One third of the 90-strong Metrocar fleet to be refurbished – the first phase of refurbishment of the whole fleet. o 225 new ticket machines, taking notes, cards and coins, at all stations – and 13 stations to get ticket control barriers. o ‘Smart’ ticket travel for passengers. o 30km of track, track beds and embankments to be renewed – along with four major rail junctions on the system. o Extensive investment in signalling and communication technology using new fibre optic systems. o 34 bridges to be repaired and strengthened – plus major drainage work in the 162-year-old North Shields Tunnel.
Over the whole nine years we will refurbish all 90 Metrocars, modernise 45 stations and install a new communications system between trains and our Gosforth control centre. This is in addition to a wider programme of overhaul and maintenance for structures such as bridges and tunnels, the overhaul of track and overhead power lines and modernisation of other infrastructure and technology.
Phase 3 – Starts 2021, funding yet to be secured. o New fleet of Metrocar trains. o New signal system. o Possible new generation ticket machines. o Further overhaul and maintenance of structures, track and overhead lines. o Further station improvements.
