Politicians approve annual fares revisions for metro and ferry

Story added: Monday 06 December 2004

PLANS for the annual changes to the fares on the Tyne and Wear Metro and Shields Ferry have been ratified by politicians today (THURS).

Nexus, the people who run the Metro and Shields Ferry, proposed freezing fares across the board on Metro for groups such as pensioners and schoolchildren. While some single fares are raised, the commuter and occasional traveller are protected by no increases either on peak returns or off peak returns and modest increases in season tickets.

The Shields Ferry fare will also be frozen at £1 single and £1.95 return.

The proposed fares revisions were debated by the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority at a meeting today (THURS). They will come into effect from 2nd January 2005.

A full appendix of changes is attached.

Cllr. David Wood, Chairman of the PTA, said: "I am delighted we are approving a fares package that contains so many fares that remain unchanged for a further year.

Our aim is to persuade Metro users to pay for more journeys in advance by buying return tickets (or season tickets for the regular commuters). Bearing in mind most people who travel somewhere then travel back it seems amazing to me that so many passengers still by single tickets which takes more time and is much more expensive."
