BUS PASSENGERS in Tyne and Wear will find services enhanced when the latest phase of the Superoutes concept was launched today, Friday. Phase 3 of Superoutes will see enhanced services provided by bus operators Stagecoach, Go North East and Arriva, along with Nexus and the five district councils of Tyne and Wear. In all, six new routes will be added to the 35 already up and running. These are: Route 3/4: South Shields - Biddick Hall. Route 4: Downhill - Sunderland City Centre - Doxford Park. Route 16: Hastings Hill - Sunderland City Centre - Red House Estate. Route 30/31: Fenham - Newcastle City Centre - Fawdon/Montagu Estate. Route 36: Newcastle City Centre - Whickham View. Route 100: Newcastle City Centre - MetroCentre. In attendance at the launch were Nexus Development Director, Bernard Garner and members of the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority (PTA), including Councillors David Wood and Joe Lawson, Chair and Vice Chair respectively. PTA Chair, Councillor David Wood told assembled guests: “We’ve chosen to launch on Wearside today to focus on the progress being made towards rolling Superoutes out right across Tyne and Wear. “Today, six new routes join the existing 35 but there is much more work to do. Superoutes are about much more than the buses themselves. Just as important are the conditions of the bus stops, the amount of time spent stuck in traffic and the quality of the door-to-door journey, and that’s where Nexus and the local authorities come in as the project is all about effective partnership working. “Superoutes has made a good start. The challenge now is to move the concept up a gear so that Superoutes really stand out from the crowd and are recognised as a premium quality service.” Those attending the launch learned of the impact of Superoutes so far and their potential to make a real difference to the quality of bus travel in Tyne and Wear. Superoutes are frequent, top quality bus routes with guaranteed service standards. Passengers can expect all of the following and more: Frequent and regular services from early until late; Easy access buses; Friendly drivers trained in customer care; Comprehensive service information at bus stops; Quicker journeys resulting from bus priority measures; All the information you need at www.superoute.com Bus routes here to stay; Bernard Garner, Development Director for Nexus, said: “The launch of Phase 3 means that most major bus corridors in Tyne and Wear will be served by Superoutes, with more will follow. “Each route will be regularly reviewed to ensure that passengers’ needs are met, and improvements made to ensure that Superoutes are the best buses around.”
