"Snow "good for the car as metro goes from strength to strength despite the bad weather

Story added: Thursday 24 February 2005

Tyne and Wear Metro operator Nexus is highlighting strong performance figures for reliability and punctuality this week despite the heavy snow which has brought most of the region to a standstill.

Bosses at Nexus are reporting excellent reliability and punctuality this week (averaging 93%) as the region’s motorists come to grips with snowstorms and high winds blocking access roads into Tyne and Wear.

In some cases the journey to work time of private car drivers has been trebled say motorists.

This makes a cogent argument for people to “ditch” the car and use Metro to get to work, say Nexus.

“Metro is all about moving people from their private cars onto a safe, reliable and punctual system, “ explained Mike Parker, Director General of Nexus.

“This week has been a prime example of how congestion, triggered by bad weather, can strangle a city’s arterial roads and restrict business.

“In the coming weeks congestion is set to get worse with the closure of the High Level Bridge and the message is clear-there’s never been a better time to ditch the car and give Metro a try.

"Metro has been the pioneer of light rail in the UK and will be 25 years old this year.

“Over half our commuters are car users who have made the choice to leave their car at home.

"The Metro provides a faster and predictable journey time. The Metro, unlike the car, doesn't get held up in traffic."
