Creative kids bring a bit of sparkle to a Tyneside Metro station (09/12/2005) Creative kids have brought a festive sparkle to a Tyneside Metro station. Pupils from St Wilfrid’s and Brinkburn comprehensive schools in South Shields came up with the designs after Metro operators Nexus decided that the Tyne Dock station needed brightening up. The theme was the ‘celebration of South Tyneside’ and after weeks of hard work and effort the finished pieces have gone on display on large 8ft by 4ft hoardings. Director of Communcations at Nexus, Andy Bairstow, said: “We are really delighted with it. The children put in a huge amount of effort into this project and really have excelled themselves so very well done to them all. The station is looking fantastic and it’s all thanks to them.” “The station is due to have a refurbishment and this art more than fits the bill until that process is brought forward.” Jane Jones, Art Teacher, at St Wilfrid’s school said: “The year nines have certainly enjoyed it. This is something they wouldn't normally get the opportunity to do. It’s a rare opportunity to get involved in a community art project, so we jumped at the opportunity to take part.” Peter Graham, Head of Art at Brinkburn School said: “They liked doing something for their patch. They all agreed the station needed brightening up and were really proud to play a part.”
