Donna Air opens up new world for people with a learning disability

Story added: Thursday 10 February 2005

Actress, TV presenter and new mum, Donna Air, today showed her support for UK charity Mencap's New Worlds campaign, to raise awareness and understanding about learning disability in Newcastle and the North-East using billboards of Jeffrey Overal (from Consett) across the city.

The billboard shows how people with a learning disability like Jeffrey can learn to travel on the Metro, with the right kind of support from Mencap.

Donna said: "A learning disability affects a person's ability to learn and do practical, everyday things that many of us take for granted. Yet they can achieve a lot in life if they are given the right support. I wish Mencap lots of luck in spreading this message in Newcastle and the North-East and hope it helps open up new worlds of opportunities for many more people with a learning disability."

Donna was joined by fellow Geordie, Mencap's solicitor Aarti Puri who works closely with the charity's local Newcastle fundraising office, which played a vital part in setting up the awareness campaign.
