Jim's top of the class as he scoops Nexus' EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH award

Story added: Friday 13 May 2005

Top class people skills have earned Nexus customer advisor Jim Barnes the company’s employee of the month award.

The 37 year-old, of Wallsend, showed outstanding commitment to ensure a passenger got their bag back after leaving it on a bus bound for Consett from the MetroCentre.

"The woman was shocked that she’d lost it and was worried about the credit cards," said Jim. "I immediately rang the bus company and they managed to trace the missing bag.

"When the bus turned up a few hours later the missing bag wasn’t there, so straight away I rang them again and got the manager to make sure it was sent down on the next one."

Once it turned up, Jim took the missing bag to the woman’s place of work in the MetroCentre and she was over the moon to have it back.

Jim added: "I was shocked to hear I was getting employee of the month and I’m delighted to get the award – it makes me feel appreciated and part of a successful team.

"The secret to good customer service is always to be pro-active and always believe in giving good quality service, no matter what situation you are faced with."

Jim’s boss, Nexus Retail Manager John Souter, said: "I’m really pleased for Jim and this commendation is thoroughly deserved.

"His application to the job and commitment to delivering high standards of customer service is excellent. Well done."

Gateshead Interchange Manager, Bernard McDermott, added: "Jim went out of his way to return the woman’s lost bag, for which he got a note of appreciation and thanks.

"I was amazed that while I was discussing this with him another customer came over to commend Jim for his pleasant manner when dealing with her and others.

"This is exactly the image of customer service we want to project and Jim is obviously an asset to the organisation."

When he’s not at work Jim gives up his time to work with children with learning difficulties at the Southlands School in North Shields.

As a fully qualified youth worker Jim ensures the youngsters have plenty of fun while completing practical exercises. "It’s work I enjoy and it’s rewarding to see the kids respond to the activities we organise," he said.
