MENCAP AD CAMPAIGN

Story added: Tuesday 01 February 2005

Nexus has teamed up with a major charity to raise awareness of living with learning disabilities.

The Tyne and Metro operator is supporting an advertising campaign for charity Mencap on its system through posters which detail Mencap's work and its policies.

Mencap is trying out a new advertising campaign in and around Newcastle to raise awareness of its work and what it means to have a learning disability.

It is the first of its kind for the charity and if successful, Mencap will roll it out to other parts of the country.

People in Newcastle will see Mencap advertising on billboards, in local newspapers, on the Newcastle Metro, and on Century FM radio – and in leaflets distributed across the city.

The adverts show how Jeffrey and Susan, who both have a learning disability, find everyday things difficult – like using the Metro and a cash point – and how Mencap supports them to do these things on their own.

Mencap’s collection of Snap! photo competition winners will also be on display at Discovery Museum until 18 February. It showcases the artistic talent of people with a learning disability, their families, friends and carers and offers a unique insight into their lives.

Jo Williams, Mencap’s chief executive, said: “Mencap works in a highly competitive world of worthwhile charitable causes. So it is vital that we make the public understand all about learning disability and what Mencap does if we are to maintain the range and quality of our services.”

Andy Lee, Head of Media and Public Relations at Nexus, said: "Nexus is a good neighbour and has a commitment to social inclusion. We are pleased to support and endorse a campaign like this which raises awareness and aspirations."
