Metro gears up to take THE

Story added: Friday 25 February 2005

EXTRA trains will be on hand on Monday to take the strain of extra commuters switching to Metro when the High Level Bridge closes this weekend.

From Monday, Metro operator Nexus will boost the frequency of trains in the peak times by increasing 14 trains to a maximum of 17 trains between 7-9am and 14 trains to a maximum of 17 between 3-6pm through the core areas.

This will meet the extra capacity expected to be generated by the closure of the bridge.

A spokesman for Nexus, said: "We realise the impact the closure will have on congestion and commuters in Newcastle Gateshead.

"Many people, we think, will make a switch to Metro in a bid to avoid traffic jams. That's why we are adding extra trains between Pelaw and Benton to cope with that extra demand. Encouraging people to make the switch to the Metro from their cars is a key part of our business."
