New brochure showcases artwork in Metro's 25th year. (12/12/2005)

A new brochure has been launched showcasing the wealth of artwork on the Tyne and Wear Metro since it first started 25 years ago.

‘What Makes a Memorable Journey?’ is a 50 page guide to the many works – both permanent and temporary - which have been commissioned on the railway since 1977.

It has been published by Metro operators Nexus to celebrate the vast array of different art projects that have been developed over the last three decades.

The Nexus Art on Transport programme has been nationally and internationally recognised for the quality and innovative character of the artworks it commissions. ‘What Makes a Memorable Journey?’, it is hoped, will further ensure that people will have the opportunity to extend their understanding and enjoyment of these works

The guide contains detailed descriptions and colour illustrations of all the permanent commissions, describing the artists’ ideas and processes which went into the making of them.

A guide to the region’s art galleries is also included, to encourage local people and visitors to explore further the wealth of visual arts activity in Tyne and Wear.

Writing in the brochure’s introduction, journalist Janet Street-Porter, says: “Nexus has given something back to the travellers of Tyne and Wear. It’s given them a transport system which is unique in terms of the visual treats it offers customers.

“It beats the London Underground hands down, and, best of all, it continues to add new attractions to make our journey by bus or train just that little bit more interesting, in ways you couldn’t have dreamt of.”

Mike Parker, Director General of Nexus, said: “Art in public places is a vital component in creating and sustaining lively communities and creative towns and cities.”

‘What Makes a Memorable Journey’ will be published on 13th December 2005 and will be available for free from Nexus Travel Shops, Tourist Information Centres and Galleries throughout the region.
