Nexus signs up to group breaking enviromental charter

Story added: Friday 24 June 2005

Nexus, the Tyne and Wear PTE, has become a co-signatory to the UITP Charter on Sustainable Development which was signed in Rome earlier this month.

The UITP Charter on Sustainable Development is comprised of member bodies who aspire to high standards of health and safety and environmental targets across the rail industry.

Mike Parker, Director General of Nexus, signed the document at an event in Rome earlier this month.

He was accompanied by Councillor David Wood, Chairman of the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority.

As part of membership to the charter Nexus has committed itself to;

· Having an environmental performance it can be proud of and to which all staff are committed.

· Taking a responsible approach and to apply environmental management policy impartially (when formulated) to all Nexus activities.

· Having processes to confirm that the policy is being followed and that the minimum standards are being met. These will include using independent experts to verify health, safety and environment performance data and to certify the environmental management systems.

Mike Parker, said:

“In particular this charter sets out how the PTA and Nexus will pursue the goal of no harm to people, protecting the environment, using material and energy efficiently to provide products and services, publicly reporting on performance against charter and managing health, safety and environment matters as any other critical business activity.

“In this way we aim to have a health, safety and environment performance we can be proud of, to earn the confidence of customers, stakeholders and society at large, to be a good neighbour and to contribute to sustainable development.”

Earlier this year, Nexus appointed its first environmental officer as part of its Health and Safety team to help shape and deliver the strategy.
