Nexus welcomes £11 million for more officient local transport

Story added: Thursday 03 March 2005

NEXUS Director General Mike Parker today (FRID) welcomed the news that Eldon Square will receive a Government cash boost of £11million.

Mr Parker, who runs Nexus, the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive, said:

"Eldon Square, which we manage, is in desperate need of improvement and is a real blemish on the public transport map. We're delighted that the Government have agreed to substantially invest in the future of Eldon Square and we are confident that the enhancement to passenger facilities will assist us in persuading people to make the switch to high quality public transport."

Eldon Square Bus Station in Newcastle City Centre will receive £11 million worth of Government funding to provide state-of-the-art facilities close to the existing bus and Metro stations at Haymarket and in the very heart of the city. The redevelopment of Eldon Square and the improvements to the surrounding area will deliver improved accessibility, personal security and a better more user friendly environment for local people.
