Tyne and Wear public transport body Nexus says it will spend more than £1.8m supporting school bus travel in Gateshead this year (2004/05) Around £1m will go directly to bus services, while the remainder will pay for cheap bus fares (30p flat fare) for children travelling to and from school. Nexus has also undertaken a complete review of secondary school bus service provision in Gateshead, focusing on accessibility and social inclusion. 'The review has introduced clear access standards to schools recognising that good access is critical to the development of all children in Tyne and Wear. It will also provide for a uniform flat-rate fare of 30p for youngsters. The review is supported by the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority (PTA), whose commitments include maintaining fares concessions for children, working with the Education Authority and individual schools to develop safer routes to schools initiatives, and securing additional services as appropriate. The PTA’s overriding objective is to reduce transport related social exclusion.
