Irish dancing and music were on hand at the region’s premier music venue today (28 February 2005) when a month long celebration of Irish culture began. Dancers and musicians teamed up after being brought together at the Sage Gateshead by Nexus, the Metro operator, and the makers of Ireland’s favourite drink Guinness, to launch a month long celebration of Irish culture and music across Tyne and Wear. Riverdance performer Kelly Burne joined Tony Corcoran (Traditional Irish Musician and chairman of the Tyneside Irish Society) and colleagues to launch the campaign. The event was one of several planned in the coming weeks and on St Patrick’s Day itself, Tyne and Wear Metro and Guinness will be offering free Metro travel and a pint of Guinness to consumers aged 18 and over thanks to promotional offers at pubs near Metro stations across the region.
