Traveline North East celebrated its fifth birthday recently. The service provides telephone and internet access to all forms of public transport information across the North East. An anniversary dinner was held at the Copthorne Hotel, Newcastle on March 3, attended by representatives of many organisations involved in the service since its birth early in 2000. Provided through partnership between transport operators and local authorities in the North East, Traveline North East is estimated to have handled over two million telephone enquiries and almost as many web based enquiries since it was launched. The service has been rightfully hailed as a triumph of partnership working and there to represent the various parties were Chairman Paul Matthews, Chris Gibbard from the Department for Transport, Nick Illsley, Chairman of Traveline nationally, as well as representatives from all partner organisations, government office founders, suppliers and the contractor. "Five years is indeed a significant landmark in the short history of Traveline in the North East, and I am proud of the success that has been achieved" said Paul Matthews. "Delivering such a core service to customers requires the commitment and determination of many, many stakeholders across the region." "I am delighted that the strong partnership working in the region between transport operators, local authorities and suppliers has enabled us to rise to the challenges." "We look forward to further improvements to our services to customers over the next five years."
