Metro's famous 'yellow M' turns magenta for glow.

Story added: Tuesday 28 November 2006
Magenta Metro cube One of North East England’s most famous brands is turning magenta for Glow, NewcastleGateshead’s first international festival of light and the centerpiece of this year’s Winter Festival.

Metro has transformed two distinctive ‘yellow M’ cube station signs above Monument station for the duration of Glow, which will see iconic buildings and landmarks throughout the city lit the festival colour of magenta.

It is the first time in the 26-year history of the Tyne and Wear Metro that the famous logo has been anything other than yellow.

Huw Lewis, head of external affairs for Nexus, said: “The ‘yellow M’ is more widely recognised than almost any logo in North East England – it stands for the high standards and local pride associated with Metro.

“We have never altered our logo in this way before but Glow is an exciting event and Monument station is a great place to start exploring this festival of light in the heart of Newcastle-Gateshead.

“I was down at Monument just after the magenta cubes went up this week and they were turning a few heads – it’s giving people something to smile about.”

Stella Hall, Creative Director at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: "We’re encouraging local people and businesses to really get behind the Winter Festival and help get NewcastleGateshead Glowing in some fun and imaginative ways.

“We’re delighted that Nexus are showing their support by turning some of the iconic yellow metro cubes the festival colour of magenta pink. I'm sure everyone will notice the striking change and we hope that it will help to spread the word even further about Glow, our first international festival of light which promises to be spectacular.”

More than 10 million passengers flow through Monument every year, making it one of the busiest stations outside the South East.

Hundreds of thousands of Christmas shoppers, revellers and commuters will see the glowing magenta cubes on Blackett Street and the top of Grey Street.

The two cubes stand on poles above entrances to the stations. The colour was changed by replacing Perspex panels through which the light shines.

Further information on Glow and NewcastleGateshead Winter Festival 06 can be found at www.NewcastleGateshead.com. A guide to the festival can be picked up at Tourist Information Centres and major venues throughout the region.
