Metro today announced it is opening two car parks free on Sundays up to Christmas to help out shoppers heading for Newcastle city centre. The car parks at Regent Centre and Four Lane Ends Metro stations will be open free of charge every Sunday from November 26 to December 17. This is in addition to normal Monday-Saturday opening, when the car parks cost £1 a day (Regent Centre) and £2 a day (Four Lane Ends) to use. Both stations offer easy Park-and-Ride to the city centre, with a Metro journey time of 12 minutes or less to Monument and four trains an hour on Sundays. An off-peak adult day return to Monument is £2.50 and a child DaySaver unlimited ticket £1. Metro Director Mick Carbro said: “City centre roads become very congested in the run-up to Christmas, but Metro Park-and-Ride offers a good-value alternative to traffic jams and the stress of searching for somewhere to park. “Metro takes you to the heart of Newcastle’s shopping area, to either Haymarket or Monument it’s a cheap way to travel often quicker than the car. “If you’ve got a MetroSaver annual pass then a Christmas Shopping trip is totally free on Metro, wherever you’re travelling.” The two car parks will not be open on Sunday, December 24.
