Nexus is to make a £45,000 contribution to a scheme aimed at helping South Tyneside’s jobless back to work. The money will go towards South Tyneside Council’s Flexible Transport Fund. This provides support and public transport costs for people attending interviews, job fairs, training and the first few weeks back at work, as well as volunteering and other activities designed to enhance job prospects. The project is targeted at the six Neighbourhood Renewal Fund employment priority areas of South Tyneside. John Usher, Head of Transport Integration for Nexus, said: “This is a very practical way to help people get back into mainstream society by making travel easier. Nexus are proud to support this scheme which fits closely with our aims.” Cllr Tom Hanson, a South Tyneside representative on the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority, said: “The Flexible Transport Fund will make a real difference to people trying to take their first few steps back onto the jobs ladder. Nexus will spend almost £1 million this year on projects across Tyne and Wear aimed at tackling social exclusion. This is one of the three core aims for Nexus set out by the Tyne and Wear Transport Authority. In South Tyneside other projects supported by Nexus include: Connect community transport, to provide group travel arrangements outside the traditional network; the South Tyneside General Hospital shuttle bus, and Positive Action Training, providing training and work opportunities within Nexus.
