Nexus welcomes Eddington Report on Transport

Story added: Friday 01 December 2006
Nexus has welcomed the main findings and recommendations, published today, of the Government’s Eddington Transport Study.

The study, led by Sir Roy Eddington, is a detailed look at how transport can best serve the future needs of the UK economy.

It recognises that more than two thirds of journeys for business and commuting are made in urban areas, and recommends a number of ways forward to manage congestion for the good of the economy.

The full report can be obtained from HM Treasury website here.

Bernard Garner, Director General of Nexus, said: “The Eddington Transport Study demonstrates the importance of effective transport systems to the future of city regions – his recommendations are hugely important to Nexus and our partners as we promote ways to support economic growth, manage congestion and protect the environment in Tyne and Wear.

“We welcome his recommendation that Government give a fresh start to the bus industry, with local controls to serve local people and jam-busting priority schemes.”

“Eddington recognises most travel in Britain is within urban areas and that investment in urban transport schemes is money well spent boosting the economy. This is very encouraging as we develop plans for the £500m re-invigoration of Metro.”
