Story added: Wednesday 19 March 2008
Nexus today passes on its congratulations to Ylana First, as she receives an MBE for her serives to art and the community.

Ylana receives the award in recognition of her campaigning work to make Tynemouth station an asset for the whole community, and to see the listed Victorian station restored.

The station is used by more than a million Metro passengers every year but is owned by a separate company, Station Developments Ltd.

It is host to regular art installations arranged by Ylana and the Friends of Tynemouth Station, as well as book fairs, the famous weekend markets and monthly farmers' markets.

North Tyneside Council and Millhouse Developments, the main partners in Station Developments Ltd,  have launched a programme of repairs to esnure the station has a robust future.

The eventual aim is to restore the characteristic canpoies to their original 1880s specifications to create performance spaces alongside a programme of special events and space for cultural businesses.

A film made by the Cabinet Office details some of the contribution Ylana has made to the future of this important station. The film can be viewed here.

Well done!
