A 21 year old man has had what was probably the most expensive drink of his life after being fined £262.50 and ordered to pay £75 court costs for drinking alcohol on the Metro. The man, from Wallsend, was travelling between St Peter’s and Sunderland metro stations when he was caught drinking alcohol by British Transport Police officers. Consuming alcohol on the Metro system is against byelaws and the man was fined when he appeared before Sunderland Magistrates’ Court on August 8. Sgt Bob Moody, of British Transport Police, said: “These rules are there for a reason. Consuming alcohol on the Metro system could lead to all sorts of problems including disorder, anti-social behaviour and other crimes. We want to make sure that everyone can enjoy a safe and pleasant journey on the Metro and anyone caught drinking alcohol on the trains can expect to be put before the courts as has happened in this case.” Metro Director, Mick Carbro, said: "This case sends out the message that if you get caught boozing on the Metro it's likely to be the most expensive drink you ever have. "The consumption of alcohol on the Metro is strictly prohibited and has been since 2004. The ban, which was this year taken up by London Underground, has helped us to reduce crime and disorder on the network over the last three years."
