A new passenger lift at Sunderland station’s south concourse came into service today, 16 September 2008. The new lift is the latest stage in the £7 million refurbishment of the station’s platform areas, funded by Nexus. The main south concourse of the station, managed by Northern and owned by Network Rail, has been without a lift since March. This has been to allow for the lift to be upgraded and major alterations made ready to install a passenger escalator at the city centre station for the first time. During this time passengers needing a lift have been able to use a second one at the station’s north concourse. But both are now in operation, making travel that little bit easier.
