Passenger Transport Authority Members Visit 2008

There was plenty for the members of the Tyne and Wear Passnger Transport Authority to see on their annual Nexus visit.

The councillors were shown the progress of three major capital projects – Sunderland Station, Washington Galleries bus station and the Haymarket Metro station development.

The visit, which takes place every year, was conducted by Nexus Director General, Bernard Garner, and Director of Rail and Infrastructure Ken Mackay, assisted by members of the Nexus projects team.

The visit got underway at Sunderland Civic Centre with a presentation on major scheme proposals for Wheatsheaf, Chester Road and Durham Road.

After a tour of Sunderland Station it was off to Washington Galleries for the site visit and then on to the newest Metro station at Simonside on South Tyneside.

The members also called in at bus operator Go North East for a group discussion and a presentation on Durham Road BRT and major scheme proposals in Gateshead.

The afternoon session took in Northumberland Park Metro station to inspect work in progress before the visit concluded at Haymarket station in Newcastle city centre.
