UPDATE: Gateshead resurfacing, bus stands move.

Story added: Tuesday 23 September 2008
Resurfacing at Gateshead Interchange enters its final phase on Monday, 29 September.

That means the stands many buses will call at from Monday change while this final phase - Phase 3 - is completed over the next few weeks.

Work is going well and is so far ahead of schedule, and passengers are being advised to check with staff or posters at the interchange and look out for signs directing them to different stands.

The pdf leaflet at the bottom of this page gives details of where buses will call during Phase 3, which involves digging up and resurfacing the road surface closest to Wilkinsons on the north side of the interchange.

Extra staff will remain on hand to guide passengers during the work.

The X66 CentreLink non-stop bus to MetroCentre will pick up and drop off passengers on the A184 Prince Consort Road, next to the interchange, where a special stop and shelter is being erected.

Quaylink, Go North East ‘The Loop’ 94 towards Team Valley, plus Go North East ‘Highwayman’ buses 95, 96, and 97 towards Whickham and MetroCentre will call at Jackson Street, opposite the interchange.

A Nexus spokesman said: “This work only affects where buses stop within the interchange. Buses will still follow their normal routes into and out of Gateshead.

“Passengers who get on or off at Gateshead should check leaflets, look out for signs and follow advice from staff.

“The resurfacing will keep the roads in the interchange in good condition for another 15 years. We’ll keep disruption to passengers to a minimum while we get the job done.

"Passengers have been very patient and understanding so far, and the good news is we are ahead of schedule and hoping to finish within the next month."
