Young people quiz experts on climate change.

Story added: Tuesday 16 September 2008
Young people from across the region will this week get to quiz experts over the measures needed to tackle climate change at an event in North Tyneside.

The 'Big Green Question Time’, being held in the Saville Exchange on Wednesday (September 17) is organised in partnership with North Tyneside Council, North Tyneside Friends of the Earth, Nexus, and the Energy Savings Trust North East.

It follows on from the successful ‘Big Green Seaside Day’, which recently attracted 8,000 visitors to Whitley bay Metro Station to find out how to adopt a greener lifestyle.

The panel, which will face an audience of around 80 young people, will be chaired by Dr Bruce Carlisle senior lecturer in Environmental Management, Northumbria University and member of North Tyneside Friends of the Earth.

He will be joined by: Dr David Golding CBE, Development Co-ordinator for Make Poverty History North East; Amy Hunt, Environment Reporter, Evening Chronicle; Austen Davies - pig breeder and columnist for Cumberland News; Dr Stephen Blenkinsop, climatologist, Newcastle University; Kevin Huggins-Cooper, Strategic Director of Organisational Improvement for North Tyneside Council and Huw Lewis , Head of Corporate Communications, Nexus.

Councillor John Stirling, North Tyneside Council’s Cabinet member for Sustainable Development said: "This is an unique opportunity for our young people and the panellist to share views on climate change.

"For us to make a real difference to our environmental future we need all generations to work together to explore ideas and implement changes needed."

"The panel represents a wide diversity of expertise including climate science research, transport, world poverty and debt relief, environmental management, environmental journalism, farming and local authority corporate leadership.

"We hope this will be an exciting opportunity for all involved to deepen their understanding of climate change issues from different perspectives."

The young people posing the questions are from: Norham Community Technology College, North Shields; Burnside Business and Enterprise College, Wallsend; St Thomas More RC High School, North Shields,; Longbenton Community College; Monkseaton Community High School( - all in North Tyneside – along with Heworth Grange Comprehensive and St Joseph's RC Comprehensive, Gateshead.

They will be joined by an invited audience, including other youngsters from High Schools and Sixth Forms across the borough, including students from the Kings School Tynemouth and TyneMet College

The Big Green Question Time will be filmed and recorded live, and an edited version of the debate made available to all via the Internet, helping to raise the profile of climate change issues across the wider community.
