Serious disruption to Metro services: Tuesday 30 June

Story added: Tuesday 30 June 2009
Metro services suffered serious disruptions this morning after police asked us to stop trains in the Jesmond area because an individual  refused to move from a dangerous position above Metro tracks.

This caused severe delays to all Metro services and we would like to apologise to our passengers and assure you we did all we could to minimise the impact.

The police incident is now over. Trains are now running to all stations but not to a normal timetable, which we expect to be restored later today.

Metro services were suspended from around 6.20am between Gateshead Stadium, Regent Centre and Four Lane Ends as we needed to turn the overhead power lines off for the police to work safely.

We asked local bus companies to accept Metro tickets and used our own website and local radio and TV stations to keep passengers informed.

We did not provide a dedicated replacement bus service because it would have taken too long to get buses to and between affected stations in the height of the morning rush hour. Advising people to use existing bus services was the best option for our customers.

At around 7.45am we were able to run trains from South Shields and Sunderland as far as Gateshead and from around 8.20am as far as Haymarket.

The police resolved the incident at around 9.30am from when we worked as fast as possible to restore power to the affected area and start services to all stations.
