Essential public transport information for Christmas and New Year

Metro:

There are no Metro services on Christmas Day, Friday December 25, or on New Year’s Day, Friday January 1.

On Christmas Eve, Thursday December 24, Metro services will be running as normal until 6pm and there will be an hourly service after that. On Boxing Day, Saturday December 26, Metro services will run every 15 minutes between 10am and 7pm.

From Sunday December 27 to Wednesday December 30 Metro services will operate as normal.

On New Year’s Eve, Thursday December 31, Metro will operate as normal until 6pm and there will be an hourly service after that.

Metro will run as normal on Saturday January 2.

Bus network:

The commercial bus companies will not be running any services on Christmas Day or on New Year’s Day.

On Christmas Eve most bus services will operate a normal weekday service. Stagecoach will be running a Saturday timetable. All commercial bus services will finish between 6pm and 8pm on Christmas Eve.

On Boxing Day there will be a reduced bus network, with 50 bus routes secured by Nexus across Tyne and Wear, including Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, Sunderland and South Tyneside. These services will generally run between 9am and 6.30pm.

On Sunday December 27 there will be a Sunday timetable for commercial bus routes. From Monday December 28 to Wednesday December 30 there will be a Saturday timetable.

New Year’s Eve will also see a Saturday timetable in operation, but with buses finishing between 6pm and 8pm.

Shields Ferry:

There will be no Shields Ferry service on Christmas Day and on New Year’s Day.

On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve the ferry service will operate as normal. The last sailing from South Shields will be at 7.15pm and the last sailing from North Shields will be at 7.30pm.

On Boxing Day the Ferry will run to a Sunday timetable.

LinkUp:

There will be no LinkUp service in operation on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and on New Year’s Day. The service will be running on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve but will finish earlier. There will be a Saturday service on Monday December 28. Passengers should contact 0191 20 20 632 for further information. Bookings number: 0191 20 20 666.

TaxiCard:

TaxiCard users should contact their individual taxi operator as normal over the Christmas period.

Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland:

There are no services on Christmas Day, Boxing and on New Year’s Day. Services will start to run down at 8pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and will finish by 10pm.

National Rail:

Nexus TravelShop:

December 24: Monument, Central, Haymarket, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Shields and South Shields will close at 2pm. Four Lane Ends and Heworth will close at 1pm.

December 25, 26, 27 and 28: All stores will be closed.

December 29 and December 30: Normal opening hours.

December 31: Monument, Central, Haymarket, Gateshead, Sunderland North, Shields and South Shields will close at 2pm. Four Lane Ends and Heworth will close at 1pm.

January 1: All stores will be closed.

January 2: Normal opening hours resume.

Concessionary Travel Passes

Free bus passes and Metro Gold Cards are valid all day every day between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve.
