Families urged: apply early for free Under-16 cards as new school year approaches Nexus is advising families to apply now for Under-16 passes as the new school term approaches. The FREE card lets children buy the cheapest bus and Metro tickets or buy Nexus School travel passes valid for a whole term or year. From September 1 child fares will be capped at 50p single or £1 for the whole day with the new CAT ticket – all day, including weekends for the first time. That makes it really important young people carry an Under-16 Card - which a holder must show when buying as concessionary fare from a bus driver or when asked to show theit ticket by a Metro inspector. The cards also serve as proof a young person is under 16 or still at school and so can claim a concessionary fare. Under 16 Cards are available free to any Tyne and Wear resident aged under 16 years old on the August 31 before the school year for which the pass is valid. Application forms are printable form this website or can be obtained from nexus Travelshops all over Tyne and Wear. To find your nearest Travelshop click here. All Under 16 Cards are issued by post. You have a choice of how to apply for your pass - either by post or in a TravelShop. If you apply by post, simply send us photocopies of the applicants’ proof of address, not the originals (Nexus accepts no responsibility if original documents are sent). Applications normally take five working days to process, but this can take longer if there is a rush of applications as the new school term approaches. For this reason we’re advising families to apply early to make sure children have passes for the start of the new term. Listen to our U16 CAT radio ads:
